Words to live by... Genesis 19:23-26
What a tragedy it is to lead people into sin and not be able to recover them. Lot had made a decision to live in a very wicked city. It was so bad that God decided to destroy it. Sin is always two things--selfish and stupid. No matter what our reasoning may be, we cannot justify leading others into sinful or questionable situations. Many people today find no problem participating and condoning sinful practices even though they like to be considered Christian. The saddest part of this kind of action is that when we’re tired of the despair that accompanies sin,, we may turn around and serve God, but those we converted to our lifestyle and rebellion may never make it to God. Sin has so many faces and degrees of severity, and it affects everyone differently. Habits that are easy to break with one person may become a deadly addiction to another. We must raise the bar of accepted behavior for the benefit of those who are weaker and passive. Look around! People are affected by what others say and do in a dramatic way. Studies have shown for years that environment determines behavior to such a degree that abused and emotionally distressed individuals act out the things that even they themselves despise and fear. Lot probably never intended on destroying the lives of his family, but, unintentional or not, he did. Lot’s selfishness put his family in a very high-risk environment. He made it to safety with his daughters, but his wife lost her life by disobediently looking back (verse 26). What’s sin worth? What value do you put on the lives of your family or friends? Selfishness is the age-old sin, isn’t it? Is short-term pleasure with long-term pain worth it? What a trade off! Life is about choices. Choose God. Choose the high road. Choose not to endanger the lives and existence of those you love. Our eternal well being is God’s greatest concern. He not only cares about you, but ALL of humanity. Shouldn’t you?
