Lot had learned from his uncle that humility and honor were principles of success. In this text, we find Lot inviting two strangers into his home to protect them from the wicked nightlife of Sodom. Bowing “with his face toward the ground,” he “pressed them greatly” to be his guests for the night. Lot proceeded to make them a ‘feast’ and baked them some fresh bread. Why the extraordinary hospitality? Did Lot need new friendships so badly that he desperately reached out to all strangers in this manner?
We can’t really know the motive behind Lot’s seemingly extreme kindness to these men, but we do see a wonderful attitude of kindness and generosity displayed here. No matter where we are in life it will always serve us well to show hospitality and concern for even the strangers in our lives. Even when we’ve been selfish and purposely sinful, we can always experience God’s favor and blessing by showing concern and kindness to others.
Little did Lot know that he was saving his own life and the lives of his family by entreating these two strangers. If we’re going to err, let it always be on the side of grace. The Bible says to forgive quickly and speak softly. Let’s not allow our anger to turn into sin. Because we will be judged as we judge, our attitude must be one of kindness and meekness. We actually declare our own guilt as we speak against others.
God will save us from lives of selfishness and bad judgment as we show humility and hospitality to others. Attitude is so important. We must fight against the spirit of this world and the selfishness that plagues it by learning to serve with gladness at every opportunity.
