We have such a difficult time hearing what God is saying to us sometimes. Many times, it is because we think we know how God is going to bring his promises to pass. We think we have it all figured out. The only problem with this thinking is that it is not God’s intention to do things in a normal or predictable fashion. We forget sometimes that our Father is God Almighty! With God, ALL things are possible.
Abraham reasoned that God was obviously speaking of Ishmael when he spoke of his son and the blessing that would come through him. Notice that God ignored Abraham’s unbelief. In spite of his human reasoning, God proceeded to speak prophetically about the promised son and even named him.
God is not surprised at our unbelief. He simply wants us to get over it. God is masterful at bringing to pass the impossible through us even when we cannot see or fathom it. It is wonderful that God’s faith in us is not based on our faith in him. He’s always stretching us and enlarging our borders even though we’d be content to remain in our lethargic, present state.
Abraham must have consented in his own mind that Sarah’s scheme to have a son through natural adoption was going to have to suffice as God’s fulfillment of the promised son. God so longs for those who will not limit him but utterly refuse to stop believing until they see God’s promises miraculously fulfilled. God not only has the future mapped out for us, but knows names, places and the numbers of all that he will bring to pass when we decide to trust him.
God’s ambition is to turn our reckless abandonment away from the world and toward him. Many of us have lived outside of grace with a vengeance. God wants us to live for him with that same passion.
God wanted Abraham to experience all the promises that he had been given when he first left his homeland looking for a country that God would show him. We started out fully trusting God to take care of every aspect of our lives. How is it now that we want to take back some of that control? We must let go of our fears, and let God birth something in us that is supernatural. Let us throw everything in our lives that does not gender faith and absolute trust in God to the wind. God is ready to do incredible things in our lives. Are we ready to relinquish our control, and let God do the mighty acts that he promised through us? Let us do that today.
